Cleft lip correction surgery is usually done at an age of 3 - 6 months.
However it can be done at any age. Near normal cosmesis of the lip can be created without
leaving any significant scar on the lip. Cleft plate surgery is usually done at an age of 10 -
12 months. However it can be done at any age. When done at the correct age near normal speech
can be developed in the child. Proper muscle approximation of soft palate is required for the
same. If not repaired on time, the child learns to talk with the deformity. Such patients when
operated later in life might not have a good speech. Hence timely correction is important.
